Road trip planning for EVs
Tesla navigation handles most routing, but a little planning improves comfort and reduces charging time. This guide focuses on planning stops, backup options, and keeping everyone comfortable.
Build your charging plan
- Plan for shorter, more frequent stops instead of one long charge.
- Check station amenities (food, restrooms, lighting) before you arrive.
- Identify a backup charger within 20–30 miles of each stop.
Comfort and safety
- Pack a tire inflator and emergency kit.
- Keep charging cables accessible without unloading luggage.
- Use cabin preconditioning while still plugged in.
When weather changes
Cold or hot weather changes range. Use the trip energy graph and adjust speed or climate settings if the arrival buffer drops below 10%.
